In late 2006 we began asking some of the major names in rap music to interpret The Words in music. we called the project Wordz from the Street. At the same time we met Leila Steinberg who is doing a remarkable work to help at-risk kids and provide them with an forum and outlet for their music, poetry, and art. From Leila's AIM program, young artists such as Oblivion, Skim, and Pat's Justice came in to work alongside established artists, telling their stories as Gospels written from the streets. We found ourselves in the company of incredible talent, great hearts, with powerful stories to tell; stories of hope and survival that amplifiy the meaning of The Words. When the album is released, it will include tracks from recognized names from the hip-hop world, such as Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone, The Last Poets, Mr. Mixx from 2 Live Crew, Yo Yo, Big Chan (Snoop's Angels), as well as young talent from Watts, New York City, and South Central Los Angeles. A project like this comes at an important moment, when so many are searching for a better life, a more spiritual solution to the problems that besiege the inner-city, answering the call that we have the power, especially in community with others, to rise up and to do things that are outside the stereotypes and perceptions reflected in media and marketing. Wordz from the Street asks artists to explore blessings in their lives, and to express hope, healing, and spiritual strength in their music.
