Layzie Bone (Bone Thugs N-Harmony) was the first artist to record for Wordz from the
Street. I wanted to suggest that Layzie work from The Blessings, the chapter in The
Words that contains Jesus' words known as The Beatitudes. When we met at the recording
session, I discovered that Layzie had also (without any prior communication) chosen the
same chapter. This small synchronicity was a foretaste of how so many things would
simply come together on this project. Fader magazine recently referred to Bone Thugs
N-Harmony as "The New Spiritualists," and every aspect of our working together has
revealed the great heart, spirituality, and compassion that Bone Thugs and Layzie have
developed in their lyrics and approach to life. You can hear Layzie's track, "Blessed
Are You" in Dreghost's Listening Room. Dreghost produced the Bone Thugs N-Harmony breakout
album, Tha Crossroads, and wrote the beats for, and engineered "Blessed Are You."
Here is Layzie, in his own words, from "Blessed Are You"...
"Whas'up Jesus? I know that once upon a time, you know, my head really wasn't on straight. I couldn't tell where the blessings was comin' from. I didn't know that it was a sacrifice to get where we wanted to go. When we started rapping, man, I was like nine, ten years old, 1983, you know, mimicking LL Cool J, and Run DMC, and Rakim, and all them people, you know what I'm saying. Eazy-E was my favorite rapper way back in the day. You're talkin' about blessed men. You know, it's called hope, it's called faith, it's called stickin' to your plan and stayin' focused. Even though, you know, it was like everything was hard, well it seemed hard at the time, you know what I mean? But it was just something to make us stronger, being prepared for what God had really planned for us. So everything is a life experience. I don't believe in coincidence at all. I believe that everything happens for a reason in His own divine time, and that's a blessing from God. You're blessed to breathe. You're blessed to be here every day. You should wake up and thank God, because it's a blessing you opened your eyes." -LAYZIE BONE, "Blessed Are You" all rights protected
