"I don't recall lines, they memorize me, you devise rhymes, I hypnotize ink."
- OBLIVION
"I first heard OBLIVION on a winter's night in Los Angeles. I cannot fully
put it into words that experience, certainly not with the eloquence and poetry that illuminates his writing. I was dumbfounded, transfixed, mesmerized. It was as if I was listening
to a modern day Isaiah, if I dare say it, a true prophet. Here, no doubt, was one of
the great voices, a voice that captured, both in performance and lyrics (poetry) the heartbeat
and soul of his generation. I approached Oblivion with some trepidation, carefully. I had a sense
of the burden (of talent and vision) that he must be carrying in order to deliver such
hypnotizing and profound work. Later, and thankfully, we were able to become friends, and I
was able to witness the impact of his performance, and the power of his words, on ears that
were hearing it for the firsttime. I was there when Layzie Bone heard him, and my heart was glad at Layzie's response to Oblivion's work, and how deeply appreciative he was for this brother's
great well of compassion, and vision. He's not like any other artist, so no comparisons.
I believe he will become one of the great voices of his generation, and our time.
In October of 2007, we went into The Pass studios where I recorded some of Rickie Lee Jones' album, The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard. We were recording Layzie and Bizzy from Bone Thugs N-Harmony. Oblivion came to the studio and recorded a new track for this project, Disciples of the Concrete. Once again, he proved the depth and power of the talent he has been blessed with. In a few days we will mix the track at the venerable Sunset Sound."
